The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has issued a warning about the spread of West Nile virus (WNV) in Germany. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause serious illness in humans, including encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord).

WNV is a mosquito-borne virus that is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected with WNV by feeding on infected birds. The virus can then be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

There is no specific treatment for WNV, but supportive care can help to relieve symptoms. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.

The RKI recommends that people take the following precautions to protect themselves from WNV:

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
  • Avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Make sure screens on windows and doors are in good repair.
  • Remove standing water from your property, where mosquitoes can breed.
