Irs Extension Payment Form

File for an Extension to File Your Taxes

What is a Tax Extension?

A tax extension gives you extra time to file your taxes beyond the original due date. It's an automatic extension, meaning you do not need to provide a reason for requesting one.

How to File for an Extension

There are three ways to file for a tax extension:

  • Online: Use IRS Free File or other authorized e-file providers.
  • By mail: File Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File US Individual Income Tax Return.
  • Over the phone: Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

When to File for an Extension

The deadline to file for an extension is the same as the original tax filing deadline: April 15 for most individuals.

Estimated Tax Payment

When filing for an extension, you must estimate your tax liability and pay any amount due. You can make a payment online, by mail, or by phone.

Filing Your Extended Return

The extension grants you an additional six months to file your tax return. The new filing deadline is October 15.

Important Reminders

  • Filing for an extension gives you extra time to file your return, but it does not extend the payment deadline.
  • You must pay any estimated tax due by the original tax deadline, even if you have filed for an extension.
  • If you fail to file for an extension or pay your estimated taxes by the deadline, you may be subject to penalties and interest.
